CLIFTON FORGE — The Burnside Carpenter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4299 has honored Rhonda Burger, manager of the Dollar General store, for providing Christmas packages for veterans at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem for the past 20  years.

On Thursday, March 25, Burger was awarded a certificate and a gift card to Jack Mason’s Tavern for her help with Christmas.

“Fundraising, over the last year, did not go very well due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Post  Quartermaster Jim Rhodes.

“She (Burger) took it upon herself to sit out a box (at the store), to collect donations and she collected 35 bags this past Christmas,” said Post  Commander Kenny Lowman. “This was outstanding due to COVID.”

“I want to support the veterans because my father was a veteran,” said Burger upon accepting certificate and gift card.

“And we want to do our part to help them,” added Lowman.

The Dollar General Store is located at 423 E. Ridgeway Street in Clifton Forge.
