A long-standing, local family-operated maintenance, cleaning products and supplies business is getting a fresh start in a new location.

Oliver Distributing, formerly located on Jackson Street, has set up shop in its new location on S. Monroe Avenue.

The business got its initial beginnings in 1955, when Ralph and Mary Oliver started the business in a building not too far from its current location.

“They ran the shop as a Mom and Pop. Even Mom went out to deliver supplies,” Jim Oliver reminisced.

Upon Ralph and Mary’s retirement, their son Jim took over operations in 1966.

During Jim’s tenure, he presided over a move from the first location to the former Jackson Street location, which served as the main storefront for many years.

In 1988, Jim’s son, David then began his career in the family business, and eventually purchased the business in 2007.

As the family business saw more success over the years, it was in the early 2000s that David started to think about another move.

“I guess in the early 2000s, we didn’t have enough space in the Jackson Street location. We rented a warehouse on Maple (Avenue) for awhile, then we ended up buying the building. It was logistically too hard to manage what we had — it worked out fine — but it was a pain in the butt to go back and forth,” David said.

Another factor that made another move necessary was the fact that there was more damage to products than not due to having a loading dock.

Those problems were solved when David, after a two year process, was able to move the family business to its current S. Monroe Avenue location.

David stated that thanks to this move, logistics have improved, and there is increased storage for all of the products that are available.

The main goal for the future for Oliver Distributing, according to David, is to increase organic growth.

David also gives credit to his staff by stating that they get along great, while bickering like siblings at times, but it did not deter how they got work their done. The company employs 13 workers.

By building a reputation over three generations, Oliver Distributing proudly states that while they develop relationship with new customers consistently, there are customers that have been around since day one in 1955.

“If you are a current customer, we thank you for your business and trust. If you don’t know us, we invite you to give us a call and let us help solve your maintenance problems,” David says in a statement on the company website.
