Two workshops on monoplating using Gelli plates will be offered the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library on Tuesday, June 18, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Nancy Newhard, executive director of the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, will lead both sessions.

The workshop at 1 p.m. is for children, ages 8-12. The 6 p.m. session is for teens and adults.

Newhard, who specializes in painting, will instruct participants in how to use acrylic paint and liquid acrylics on durable Gelli plates, which are soft, reusable plates that look and feel similar to gelatin.

After the pattern is made on the plate, it is then transferred to paper using pressure. Participants will create two or three images that they may take with them at the end of the workshop.

“I will supply all materials,” Newhard stated, “but participants need to come prepared to experiment, play, and ‘get creative’.  If they have stray bits of string, odd bits of pretty papers or old labels, postage stamps, drywall tape, or burlap that they can bring to inspire and incorporate, so much the better!”

There is no cost for participants. However, space is limited, and registration is required for both workshops.
