LOW MOOR — Balchem Corp. will invest $5 million to expand its Covington manufacturing plant in Low Moor.

The expansion is expected to create six new jobs over the next two years, Balchem said in a new release issued today. Balchem currently employs 19 people in Low Moor.

The company said the expansion will help it meet a growing demand for its animal nutrition and health nutrients. The expansion will double the production of key nutrients used for the animal nutrition and health markets worldwide.

“We are very excited about the expansion at our Covington site,” said Jonathan Griffin, vice president of Balchem Animal Nutrition and Health.

“This is not only an opportunity to bring more jobs to the area, but it also allows us to further expand our manufacturing capabilities and meet the growing needs of the animal nutrition and health markets,” he said.

Balchem worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Alleghany County, the Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corp., and the Roanoke Regional Partnership in support of the expansion.

Balchem opened its manufacturing site in Alleghany County in 2013. In 2012, Balchem announced it would invest $10 million to establish the plant.

The company moved into a then vacant, 68,000-square-foot building that was owned by the county, located in the Alleghany Regional Commerce Center.

“I’m proud that Balchem has chosen to expand its facility in Alleghany County.  It demonstrates the quality of our workforce,” said Matt Garten, chairman of the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors.  “The county values Balchem and hopes to continue to support its growth here.”

“We’re pleased to see Balchem expanding and enjoying success in Alleghany County,” said Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Brian Ball.

“Advanced manufacturing is a target industry in the commonwealth that will play an important role in Virginia’s economic recovery, and we thank the company for reinvesting in its operation and creating more high-quality jobs,” Ball said.

Founded in 1967, Balchem is based in New Hampton, N.Y. The company produces  specialty ingredients, nutrients, and chemicals for a wide variety of industries, including human nutrition, animal nutrition, and oil and gas.

In its most recent  quarter, Balchem reported record net sales of $180.7 million, an increase of $14.2 million, or 8.5 percent compared to the prior year quarter.

Balchem employs more than 1,400 people worldwide.
